“To cling” has remained synonymous with healing, proliferation, hope, growth, and survival since the first cave drawing of a bison. Life begins with a cling to the uterine wall. The first human believed in the therapeutic power of his or her fears. The struggle to exist in the face of authority found its healing through the will to survive and to cling. Perhaps to hold on was also to let go of our tangible bodies in order to claim our subjecthood… To occupy a body meant to occupy the earth itself. The sky and the land met in the flow of this struggle.

The Cling is an exhibition centered around this very flow.

The thirteen participating artists come together in the healing breath of the cling. The works presented in the exhibition incorporate their subjecthood through the relationships they form with the outer world. The artists’ respective worldviews and physical manifestations transform into works of art; much like an uncontrollable need to breathe, the act of creating art itself appears as a vital passion. The works included in the exhibition, produced across different periods, share with viewers both the power of contact between individual and collective memory, as well as the memory of the cling expressed through various methods of production. The notion of “the cling” thus materializes both as word and form within a field where the artists unite art and life in a structure of time and space.
